Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg

The story behind

Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg are two acclaimed artists with previous exhibitions at Fondazione Prada and Walker Art Center. We designed the catalogue for their biggest solo exhibition yet in Sweden, at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. The challenge in this kind of project is to find a way to make moving images work in the static printed format. Our solution was to only show parts of the images on every page. A way to find evoke curiosity to find out how the narrative would proceed on the next page. In this way we could also play around with how we cropped the images to make dynamic spreads. It is always an interesting challenge to make moving images work in a static format.

Making the book was literary like walking into the twisted, surreal and intuitive world of Djurberg/Berg. One of our design decisions was to reflect the subtitle A Walk through Mud and Confusion with Small Glimpses of Air in the design. We wanted the publication to be very dense, eliminating almost all the white space in the image sections. In contrast to this, the text sections on white illustrate the ”small glimpses of air” in the title. We got about one thousand images that we narrowed down to about 700. The publication was printed and distributed by Hatje Cantz Verlag in Germany.
